Hope College will present its annual Concerto/Aria Concert with members of the Hope College Orchestra on Friday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

The concert will feature four students selected through a competition held at Hope this past October to perform with the orchestra as featured soloists. The four winners are senior Caitlin McDougall of Flint; freshman Eve Panning of Holland; senior Brent Smith of Owosso; and junior Nicholas VanderLaan of Greenville.

To open the concert the orchestra will perform the “Overture to La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie),” by Gioachino Rossini.

Eve Panning, violin, will perform “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (third movement),” by Aram Khachaturian.

Caitlin McDougall, soprano, will sing “Ach ich liebe, war so gluecklich” from the opera “IL Seraglio,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Nicholas VanderLaan, viola, will perform the “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra (first movement),” by William Walton.

To end the concert, Brent Smith, piano, will perform the Piano “Concerto No. 2 in G minor (third movement)” by Camille Saint-Saens.

The orchestra is directed by Richard Piippo of the Hope music faculty, who is an associate professor of cello/chamber music at the college. Piippo has taught at Hope since 1999.
