The 1992 graduate of Oak Harbor (Wash.) High School received Faculty Honors, the highest honor bestowed upon graduates by Northwestern’s professors, in 1996. Johnson earned a Master of Divinity degree from Western Theological Seminary and returned to Northwestern to serve as chaplain and assistant baseball coach from 1999 to 2002. He then pursued a doctorate in theology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He has been the Hinga-Boersma Dean of the Chapel at Hope College since 2005.

The college will also honor Austin Janseen, a football standout.
