The Hope College faculty at their final meeting of the academic year on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 honored President and Mrs. Bultman on the occasion of their retirement from service to the college. It was also announced that the faculty will make a monetary gift to the college's Faculty/Staff Minority Scholarship in honor of the Bultmans.

A Resolution of the Hope College Faculty

WHEREAS, James Bultman has served Hope College as President for thirteen years; and

WHEREAS, James Bultman has been connected to Hope College for parts or all of the last seven decades, a relationship dating back to 1959; and

WHEREAS, James Bultman has participated in the interviewing and hiring of 117 of the full-time faculty currently listed in the College Catalog; and

WHEREAS, James Bultman has taken the primary leadership role in fund-raising for the creation and completion of the academic buildings Martha Miller Center for Global Communication, A. Paul Schaap Science Center, and DeVos Fieldhouse; and

WHEREAS, James Bultman has taken the primary leadership role in fund-raising for the updating of Lubbers Hall and Graves Hall; and

WHEREAS, James Bultman has taken the primary leadership role in enhancing the co-curricular facilities VanAndel Soccer Stadium, DeVos Fieldhouse, Wolters Softball Stadium, and Boeve Baseball Stadium; and

WHEREAS, James Bultman continues to raise funds for the development ofthe academic buildings the Kruizenga Art Center, the concert hall/music facility, and the addition to the Engineering wing of VanderWerf Hall; the development of co-curricular facilities the Jim and Martie Bultman Student Center and the Vande Poel-Heeringa Stadium Courts; and

WHEREAS James Bultman continues to raise funds for ninety new endowed student scholarships, multiple endowed professorships, an endowed curator position, and multiple funds to promote student-faculty collaborative research; and

WHEREAS James Bultman has served as the leader and public face of two capital campaigns, which, in conjunction with other advancement initiatives, have raised $296 million in cash and pledges since 1999; and

WHEREAS, Martie Bultman has faithfully served the college for thirteen years, building relationships with Hope constituencies; traveling to promote Hope’s mission near and far;  and being the quintessential model of grace and hospitality to all members and guests of our campus community; and

WHEREAS, Martie Bultman has shown unflagging support for Hope students through attendance and participation at a multitude of academic and co-curricular events and by serving as advisor to Mortar Board; and

WHEREAS, James and Martie Bultman have been, in full manner, actively involved in all aspects of student life; including attending athletic events, attending artistic and academic performances and exhibitions, attending daily chapel and Gathering services, dining with students at Phelps and Cook Halls; and encouraging and modeling a disciplined Christian life and tireless work ethic; and

WHEREAS James and Martie Bultman have diligently worked as a team to promote and develop Hope College as the best liberal arts college that is simultaneously exceptional academically and vibrantly Christian; be it

RESOLVED that the faculty of Hope College, on this day April 24, 2012, hereby acknowledge, with wholehearted and genuine gratitude, James and Martie Butman for their many contributions on behalf of the faculty, their success in gathering the necessary financial and human resources to deliver an exceptional educational program, their presence at countless academic and co-curricular events, and their indefatigable energy and effort in furtherance of Hope’s noble mission.
