Hope College senior Hanna Ogawa of Yokohama, Japan, is among the finalists for a national Undergraduate Research Award from Psi Chi – The International Honor Society in Psychology.
She is among approximately a dozen finalists vying for the two awards that will be made by the association. The recognition will be presented by Psi Chi during the national convention of the American Psychological Association, taking place in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Wednesday-Sunday, July 31-Aug. 4. All of the finalists have been invited to present their work during a poster session being held on Thursday, Aug. 1, in conjunction with the convention.
Multiple Hope students have received national or regional research awards from Psi Chi through the years. Since 2000, four students received national research awards, and 19 Hope research teams received regional recognition from Psi Chi’s Midwestern Region.
Ogawa has been named a finalist for her research project “Attachment and God Concepts in Japanese Young Adults.” Among those surveyed, the research found, Christians were more likely to perceive God as nurturing, powerful and similar to their mothers, while non-Christians were more likely to perceive God as more distant and more like their fathers.
She conducted her research mentored by Dr. Jane Dickie who retired in 2012 as a professor emerita of psychology and also with Xander Krieg, a 2012 Hope graduate and psychology major. Krieg, who is Ogawa’s fiancé, won one of the national awards last year, with the presentation of his 2012 award occurring during this year’s convention. He is currently a graduate student in clinical psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Ogawa is majoring in psychology and sociology. Her activities at Hope have included serving as a resident assistant, serving as a Japanese native assistant, International Christian Fellowship, Mortar Board, Japanese Ministry, Phi Beta Kappa, Psi Chi, the International Relations Club, the Pew Society, spring break immersion trips and the Phelps Scholars Program. She is the daughter of Masafumi and Waka Ogawa of Yokohama, and a 2009 graduate of Ferris Girls’ Junior and Senior High School in Yokohama.
Psi Chi – the International Honor Society was founded in 1929 to encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship, and advance the science of psychology. Psi Chi has chapters at about 1,100 senior colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Ireland and New Zealand. Since its founding, the honor society has registered more than 500,000 lifetime members.
The honor society’s chapters are grouped within six regions: Eastern, Midwestern, Rocky Mountain, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. The Midwestern Region includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Hope’s chapter was chartered in 1965.
