Hope College center fielder Evan Maday and starting pitcher Matt Plaehn have been selected as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Baseball Athletes of the Week.

Maday received the MIAA Position Player award, while Plaehn claimed the pitching honor. Both helped the Flying Dutchmen sweep a four-game series from Albion College last weekend.

Maday batted .545 against the Britons with six hits, five runs batted in, and eight runs scored. He also recorded 14 putouts without an error.

The junior civil engineering major from Grand Rapids, Michigan (East Kentwood HS) homered twice during a 16-6, Game 1 victory at Albion on Saturday. Maday leads the Flying Dutchmen with six home runs this season.

Maday stole three bases over two games on Saturday and tied Mitch VanPutten’s 1985 team record for most stolen bases in a season with 30.

This is Maday’s first weekly honor from the MIAA.

The left-handed Plaehn tossed six scoreless innings against Albion in Game 2 of a doubleheader, a 6-0 Hope victory.

The sophomore from Okemos, Michigan (Lansing Catholic) struck out a career-high eight batters. He yielded five hits, two walks and one hit batter.

This is Plaehn’s first weekly honor from the MIAA.
