Two Hope College swimmers have been honored by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association for their performances last week.

Bailey Smith has been chosen as the MIAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while Maddy O’Donnell is the Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

Smith was pivotal in the middle distance events in a double dual meet against NCAA Division II's Saginaw Valley State University and Grand Valley State University on Saturday.  

The sophomore from Battle Creek, Michigan (Lakeview HS) led the charge in a 1-2-3 Hope finish against SVSU in the 200 free, finishing in 1:44.76. Later, he won the 500 free against SVSU finishing in a time of 4:47.04.

According to USA Swimming, Smith currently ranks 18th and 9th, respectively, in the country.

O'Donnell made her collegiate debut on Saturday against NCAA Division II's Saginaw Valley State University and Grand Valley State University. 

In her first college race she helped the 400-yard medley relay to a second-place finish with a time of 3 minutes, 54.97 seconds, completing the butterfly leg in 57.88.  

The freshman from Lincolnshire, Illinois (Stevenson HS) also finished runner-up in both the 200 freestyle (1:55.19) and the 100 freestyle (53.65).  According to USA Swimming, O'Donnell currently ranks second in the nation in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
