Hope College’s Paige Wilmer and Maddie Yakes have been selected as Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Women’s Lacrosse Athletes of the Week.

Wilmer, a midfielder, is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career. Yakes, a goalie, is the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

The pair helped the Flying Dutch open the 2021 season last week with home victories against Calvin University and Saint Mary’s College (Indiana).

Wilmer scored 11 goals and recorded three assists during the two games.

The senior from Columbus, Ohio (Upper Arlington HS) netted a stadium-record six goals during a 19-12 victory against Calvin on Tuesday. Five of the goals came during the second half. Wilmer also collected two assists and four caused turnovers against the Knights.

On Saturday, Wilmer totaled five goals and one assist during a 15-7 victory against Saint Mary’s. She also grabbed 11 ground balls.

Yakes totaled 22 saves during the week. The freshman from Rockford, Michigan (Rockford) made nine saves against Calvin and 13 against Saint Mary’s.
