The Department of Music at Hope College will celebrate composer Richard Strauss’ 160th birth year with a “Richard Strauss Gala Concert” on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

Richard Strauss was born on June 11, 1864.  Hosted by violinist and music faculty member Mihai Craioveanu, who will perform in all the selections, the concert will feature eight guest artists in quartet, quintet and duet configurations. The works being performed are Strauss’ “Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks Op. 28 (arr. Franz Hasenöhrl),” “Sonata for Violin and Piano in E-Flat Major Op. 18,” and “Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op 13.”

The guest artists will include Anders Dahlberg (string bass), Greg Bassett (horn), Stephanie Hovnanian (clarinet), Kerrissa Silverthorne (bassoon), Arturo Ziraldo (viola), Igor Cetkovic (cello), David Keep (piano) and Christina Krause (piano).

Craioveanu is professor of violin in the Department of Music at Hope. Hailed by the The Strad as “stunning... brilliant,” Craioveanu has concertized to great acclaim throughout the world. He has performed sold-out concerts in legendary venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City (including two return engagements by popular demand), Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, Atheneum Hall in Bucharest and the nationally televised “Hour of Power” program at the Crystal Cathedral in California.
