The Hope College Department of Music will present “Voices of the Americas” Featuring Maestra María Guinand on Sat., March 14, at 3 p.m. in the concert hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.
The public is invited to this free concert.
The concert will feature the Hope College Chapel Choir, SPERA, VERITAS and College Chorus, and will celebrate the rich vocal traditions of Latin America. The event is sponsored in part by the Patrons of the Arts Grant and will explore the diverse musical landscapes of Latin America through folk, popular and historical works.
A highlight of the concert will be the residency and guest conducting appearance of Maestra María Guinand, who will be in residence at Hope College from March 12–14, working with singers and leading the concert performance.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Guinand is internationally recognized for her leadership in choral music and her advocacy for Latin American repertoire. She serves as artistic director of the Schola Cantorum de Venezuela and has conducted major choirs across Europe, Asia and the Americas. Her work and her decades-long teaching career have shaped generations of singers and conductors. A passionate educator and cultural ambassador, she has dedicated her career to promoting Latin American choral music worldwide and fostering community through collective singing.
Selections will include: “Kasar Mie La Gaji,” by Alberto Grau; “Silencio,” by Rodolfo Morandi; “Sabiá Coração de Uma Viola,” by Aylton Escobar; “Dos Palabras,” by Josh Rodríguez; “A Este Sol Peregrino,” by Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco; “La Cucaracha,” by Alberto Grau; “No Me Vuelvo a Enamorar,” by Juan Gabriel; “Despertar,” by Antonio Estévez; “Verde Mar de Navegar,” by Duda and Capiba; and “Te Quiero,” by Liliana Cangiano.
The repertoire highlights the intersection of Indigenous, African and European influences that shape Latin American musical identity, bringing audiences a program filled with rhythm and storytelling.
