FINGERPRINTING PROCEDURES

All education students are required to have a criminal background check that involves fingerprinting prior to student teaching (in August for Fall semester student teachers and December for Spring semester student teachers).

Students must submit a LiveScan Fingerprint Request form to the agency they select (see list below) for processing their criminal background check by following these two steps:

  1. Click here for a list of school districts located in local West Michigan Intermediate School Districts (ISD).
  2. Click the link below for the Intermediate School District (ISD) in the county where the student teaching placement is located for instructions on how to obtain the appropriate LiveScan Fingerprint Request form.

Local agencies who process LiveScan fingerprinting are:

OUT OF STATE PLACEMENTS
Students who are student teaching out of the State of Michigan (including the Chicago and Philadelphia Semester Programs) MUST be fingerprinted in the respective states in which they are placed.

FINGERPRINTING RESULTS

At the beginning of each semester, the Education Department will submit a list of student teachers to one of two outside agencies (EDUStaff and the Professional Education Services Group [PESG]) dependent upon the county in which they are placed to verify that they have been cleared to work with children and youth in a school setting.

Student teachers will NOT be allowed to begin their placements until EDUStaff or PESG has communicated to Hope that their local ISD has cleared them of any criminal activity that would impede them from student teaching/substitute teaching in a school district.

  • If a student had a criminal background check completed within the last academic year for a paid position (coaching, summer camp, etc.), s/he will need to submit a release form to the school/camp requesting that his/her fingerprinting results be sent to the ISD that houses the school district where the student teaching placement is located.
  • If a graduate accepts a teaching position in Michigan, the school administrator/Human Resources Director will need to submit a release form to the ISD that houses the school district where the student teaching took place to request a copy of the candidate's criminal background results.

NOTE: HOPE COLLEGE DOES NOT RECEIVE COPIES OF FINGERPRINTING RESULTS, ONLY AN "ALL CLEAR" FROM EDUCStaff OR PESG. REQUESTS FOR RESULTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE HIRING SCHOOL DISTRICT ON THE CANDIDATE'S BEHALF.
