Two Hope College athletes are headed to the NCAA Division III track and field championships later this week at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

Senior Ellen Schultz of Maple City (Glen Lake HS) will run the 10,000 and 5,000 meters while freshman Emily Sowers of Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS) will compete in the discus.

Schultz is seeded 15th among 24 qualifiers in the 5,000 meter run and 15th among 34 competitors in the 10,000. Her best time this spring in the 5,000 was 17:49.54 and 37:22.27 in the 10,000. The best time this year among DIII runners in both of these events was by Emily Richard of Washington University in St.
Louis, 17:28.76 in the 5,000 and 36:09.00 in the 10,000. Last fall Schultz achieved NCAA All-America honors in cross country.

Sowers is seeded seventh among 19 qualifiers in the discus. Her best throw of 145 feet, 6 inches is a Hope and MIAA record. The best efforts this spring among DIII discus throwers was 154 feet, 3 inches by Gillianne Roberts of Wilmington, Ohio.

The finals will be Thursday in the 10,000 and on Saturday in both the discus and 5,000.
