Two recent Hope College graduates, Becky Schmidt
of Holland and Becky Timmer of Pella, Iowa, have been awarded the
prestigious postgraduate scholarship by the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA).
The program honors outstanding student-athletes from NCAA
member institutions who are also outstanding scholars. The
scholarship is presented annually to a select group of 174
student-athletes across every NCAA division and in all sports.
The $5,000 scholarships are to be used by recipients to further
their education after college graduation.
A kinesiology major, Schmidt became Hope's first NCAA
Division III volleyball All-American. She played on three
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship
teams and competed in the NCAA tournament twice. She was voted
the most valuable player in the MIAA as both a junior and senior.
A 1994 graduate of Holland High School, she is the daughter of
Dr. John Schmidt of Holland and Sara and Dr. Boyd Wilson of
Holland. She will pursue a master's degree in sport performance
and behavior at Miami University of Ohio.
A chemistry and Spanish major, Timmer was standout cross
country and track athlete. She was a two-time NCAA Division III
All-American in cross country and was also recently named a GTE
Academic All-American. A 1995 graduate of Pella Community High
School, she is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. David Timmer of
Pella, Iowa. She has been accepted into the Medical Scientist
Training Program at the University of Iowa.
These awards bring to 11 the number of Hope Postgraduate
Scholars dating back to 1974.
