Next Game Saturday, Otober 9th
1:30 p.m. EDT
HOLLAND -- They are football teams at different junctures in
their season. One is beginning its conference schedule; the
other is closing it out.
The Hope College Flying Dutchmen launch their 70th season of
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) competition
Saturday (Oct. 9) at Defiance College. The host Yellow Jackets,
meanwhile, will be playing in their final MIAA contest.
Kickoff for the Defiance homecoming game will be 1:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast by WHTC-AM (1450) and WFUR-FM (102.9).
It will be also be broadcast on the internet (www.hope.edu).
When Defiance joined the MIAA the football schedules of the
member schools had to be quickly reconfigured to accommodate the
Yellow Jackets. It meant that Defiance would play and complete
its league schedule long before any other team.
This year the Yellow Jackets are already 3-2 in conference
games and Saturday's contest with the Flying Dutchmen is their
league finale, not only for 1999 but the immediate future.
Defiance will be leaving the MIAA to join the Heartland
Conference next spring.
Hope, on the other hand, has played three non-conference
games. Winless in those contests, the Flying Dutchmen haven't
played since September 25th. Coach Dean Kreps' Dutchmen will be
seeking to avoid their first 0-4 start since 1980. That team
went on to post a 4-1 mark against MIAA opponents, however.
The Flying Dutchmen will be seeking their first-ever victory
over the Yellow Jackets. The series dates back to 1924 when
Defiance won 40-6. The teams didn't meet again for nearly fifty
years when Defiance swept a home-and-home series in 1969 (40-7)
and 1970 (24-0). There was another long interruption the series
until last fall when Defiance made its MIAA debut beating the
Dutchmen in Holland 9-7.
The Flying Dutchmen will play their next two games at home,
hosting Alma on October 16 and Adrian on October 23.
