Although they no longer control their own
destiny, the Hope football team needs to keep in mind that they
are still conference title contenders as they travel to Olivet on
Saturday (Nov. 6) for the team's final road game of the season.
Kickoff will be 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WHTC-
AM (1450) and WFUR-FM (102.9). It will also be broadcast on the
internet (www.hope.edu).
Hope's MIAA title hopes were dashed, but not vanished in a
20-14 loss to Albion last Saturday. The Britons top the
conference standings with a 5-0 record, but face a major hurdle
at Alma (4-1) on Saturday.
The Flying Dutchmen, meanwhile are 3-1 in league play
heading into their game against Olivet. Victories Saturday by
Alma and Hope would create the potential for a three-way tie for
the crown. While Albion and Alma are concluding their seasons
Saturday, the Flying Dutchmen have one remaining game against
Kalamazoo at home on November 13.
A year ago the Flying Dutchmen were cruising along with a 5-
2 campaign when the Dutchmen bowed to Albion. That setback
carried into the next game when Defiance gained an upset victory.
That potential is there again this week -- an Albion loss and an
upset-minded winless (0-8) Olivet squad.
The Hope-Olivet rivalry started in 1927. Hope holds a 40-
15-1 advantage in the series, including a 46-13 victory in
Holland last fall.
Junior quarterback J.D. Graves (Troy / Athens HS) has
established a Hope single season record for total offense. With
two games remaining, he has become the first Hope player to
surpass 2,000 yards in total offense with 2,031 yards -- 370
rushing and 1,661 passing. The previous mark was 1,860 yards by
Greg Heeres in 1984.
Senior receiver Matt Handzo (Clinton Township / DeLaSalle
HS) is now second on the Hope all-time pass reception (87) and
pass reception yardage (1,238) list.
