A poem by Priscilla Atkins of the Hope College faculty has been named "Poem of the Month" for November in the electronic edition of "The Christian Science Monitor."

The poem, "November Pink," is being published in the November 8 edition of the print version of the publication. It is currently available on the electronic version, which includes audio of Atkins reading the poem.

Atkins is arts librarian with the rank of associate professor at the college. She has had poems in publications such as "Poetry," "The North American Review," "The Midwest Quarterly," and "The William and Mary Review."

She has been a member of the Hope faculty since 1994. She is on a sabbatical leave during the current school year.

  2. Dutchmen Make Final Road Trip

     Although they no longer control their owndestiny,  the Hope football team needs to keep in mind that theyare still conference title contenders as they travel to Olivet onSaturday (Nov. 6) for the team's final road game of the season.     Kickoff will be 1 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on WHTC-AM (1450) and WFUR-FM (102.9).  It will also be broadcast on theinternet (www.hope.edu).     Hope's MIAA title hopes were dashed, but not vanished in a20-14 loss to Albion last Saturday.  The Britons top theconference standings with a 5-0 record, but face a major hurdleat Alma (4-1) on Saturday.     The Flying Dutchmen, meanwhile are 3-1 in league playheading into their game against Olivet.  Victories Saturday byAlma and Hope would create the potential for a three-way tie forthe crown.  While Albion and Alma are concluding their seasonsSaturday,  the Flying Dutchmen have one remaining game againstKalamazoo at home on November 13.     A year ago the Flying Dutchmen were cruising along with a 5-2 campaign when the Dutchmen bowed to Albion.  That setbackcarried into the next game when Defiance gained an upset victory. That potential is there again this week -- an Albion loss and anupset-minded winless (0-8) Olivet squad.     The Hope-Olivet rivalry started in 1927.  Hope holds a 40-15-1 advantage in the series, including a 46-13 victory inHolland last fall.     Junior quarterback J.D. Graves (Troy / Athens HS) hasestablished a Hope single season record for total offense.  Withtwo games remaining,  he has become the first Hope player tosurpass 2,000 yards in total offense with 2,031 yards -- 370rushing and 1,661 passing.  The previous mark was 1,860 yards byGreg Heeres in 1984.     Senior receiver Matt Handzo (Clinton Township / DeLaSalleHS) is now second on the Hope all-time pass reception (87) andpass reception yardage (1,238) list.

    Running the gamut from Bach, to Beethoven to Berio, the Hope College music faculty will perform on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
