The Hope College Concert Band will perform on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The Hope College Concert Band will perform on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts.

The public is invited.  Admission is free.

The Concert Band will present “Lessons from A Passport,” showcasing pieces that are from and highlight a variety of cultures and communities. The works performed will include “March for the Sultan Abdul Medjid,” by Gioacchino Rossini; “Heralds for an Occasion,” by Stephen Bulla; “Tall Ships from the Royal Tournament,” by Ron Goodwin; “Lawrence of Arabia,” by Maurice Jarre; “Danson No. 2,” by Aruto Marquez; “The Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron,” by David Holsinger; and “Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head,” an Appalachian folk carol arranged by Tom Wallace.

The Hope College Concert Band is directed by Dr. Ken Austin, who is an adjunct member of the music faculty. A 1970 Hope College graduate, Austin received a Master of Music degree in conducting and trumpet performance from Yale University, followed by a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting and trumpet from the American Conservatory of Music.  In addition to his current role as the Concert Band’s interim director, he performs with the West Michigan Winds, the Zeeland Community Band, the Holland American Legion Band, and the orchestra and brass ensemble at Christ Memorial Church in Holland.
