Hope College Summer Science Camps
and Academies 2015

Hope College is offering exciting opportunities this summer for students to explore the wonderful world of science and more. The programs will feature “hands-on” interactive investigations designed to teach scientific concepts in a FUN yet challenging way as well as hands-on, skill and technique building experiences in the non-science camps. Enrollment grade is the grade they will enter Fall ‘15. Partial Scholarships:  Due to the number of requests, scholarships are on hold at this time. Please check back at a later date.

Contributions can now be given on the website. If you or your company are currently blessed and can help provide assistance for other families, your generosity would be greatly appreciated...100% of your donation will go to a camper in need. Hope College is a 501.c3 institution, so your contribution may be tax deductible at the Federal level and may also be a tax credit at the State level.

Camp Costs May Be Tax Deductible as an educational or child care expense.  Please contact your tax professional to determine if you are eligible.

Refund Policy … 90% refund will be given up to 3 weeks prior to the start of camp / 50% refund will be given within 3 weeks preceding the start of camp (per session / per person).   Email sciencecamp@hope.edu to notify us of your cancellation.

The Snack Shack Is Back...There will be a snack break in the middle of each camp.  Campers may bring their own snacks (please, no items containing peanut/peanut oil or tree nuts) or purchase snacks from the Snack Shack!   Many healthy options are available.

The camps were founded by Tod Gugino, offered under the direction of Brenda Gugino and  Mike Seymour (Hope College Professor of Chemistry) and staffed by college science and education students.
 
We are excited to expand to Middle and High School offerings.  These academics give students more grade level appropriate and in-depth experiences under the direction of Susan Ipri Brown (Director, Center for STEM Inquiry)

3D Modeling and Printing
High School Academy

3D printers are invading every field:  toys, cars, food, homebuilding and even medical.  Now  is the time to find out what it is all about.  In this class you will learn how to not only draw and design your own creations using free CAD software (Sketchup2015), but you will also bring your creations to life using a 3D printer.

Air Quality Monitoring
High School Academy

How does air quality vary in your home, neighborhood and throughout the day?  Build an air quality sensor and learn to take and interpret air quality data.  Visit local environmental organizations to see how they are working to improve our local environment.  (Back to Camp Schedule)

Arduino:  Electronics and Programming
High School Academy
Small electronic chips that run secret programs are hidden in everyday items.  The Arduino is a platform that bridges the gap between electronics and software.  In this class you will not only learn basic programming and electronics but also build devises that are hidden and can run secret codes. Art 2D & 3D II 
This camp takes old favorites and combines them with new projects while exploring the elements and principles of 2D and 3D art through the mediums of watercolor, graphite, colored pencils, wood, clay and metals. (Back to Camp Schedule) 

Classic Cartooning 
A Googenius Camp

Learn the basics of cartoon strip and panel development. Create characters, add expressions and learn inking techniques. A treasury will be assembled at the end of the class. Returnees will be challenged. (Back to Camp Schedule)

Club Vet
Explore the exciting world of animal science and care. If you want to own a pet, be a vet or work/volunteer in a pet related job, then definitely come learn about animal habitats, nutrition and health care. (Back to Camp Schedule)

Club Vet Safari
Explore the awesome world of animals as we expand our study of our furry, feathered and scaled friends across the globe (think Lion King or Madagascar).   If you’ve wanted to be a Safari Guide, Vet, Zookeeper or start your own pet business…this is the camp for you!

Meets Monday-Friday

Solids, liquids and gasses-oh my.  Polymers, pH and density-no lie.  Come explore chemistry like never before with hands-on, exciting experiments and activities designed to satisfy both blooming and budding scientists.  Who doesn’t like liquid nitrogen, dry ice, alka seltzer rockets, flubber and so much more?
