Summer 2008 Science CampsHope College offers exciting opportunities for children 4 years old to 9th grade (Fall ’08) to explore the wonderful world of science. The programs feature hands-on investigations designed to teach scientific concepts in a FUN yet challenging way. A camper manual and a parent manual will be provided for each session. Lunch hour (12:00-1:00). We provide supervision for campers in both a morning and an afternoon session. The cost is only $10/week for each child. Campers must bring their own lunch. The ever popular “Snack Shack” returns with lots of choices so kids start saving your allowance, you won’t want to miss all the cool stuff. Thanks to Gentex, need based SCHOLARSHIPS are available. Week 1 Session 1: Tykes Lego’s (FULL/CLOSED) Get ready to build awesome Lego structures as you are introduced to the science of simple machines, the mechanics of motion and the control of forces. Take your knowledge and skills to new heights as we engage in daily challenges and build, build, build. Session 2: Harry Potter Upon arrival Monday, you’ll be “sorted” into houses and be whisked away to the magical world of science-Harry Potter style. Explore the physics and engineering of flying broomsticks, the camouflage of a Disillusionment Charm and the biology of bizarre plants and animals, just to name a few. Session # 34: Classic Cartooning Want to draw cartoons for the Sunday funnies? This is the place to start! All the basics of character and comic strip development in one class. Students will get a copy of their work in a class treasury. Session 4: Crime Scene Investigation How do modern day detectives put the pieces of a crime scene puzzle together? Find out what types of tricks and high-tech gadgets are used as you solve an all-new crime. Fingerprinting, DNA analysis and blood typing are just a few skills we’ll learn. Session 5: Disgusting Dissection You can really dig into this type of science and discover animals from the inside out. This camp applies dissection techniques to organisms such as earthworms, crayfish, sharks, pigs and rats and compares them to our own bodies. Session 6: Super Science Sampler Looking for a mix? This camp will have a different theme each day from our other K-2 camps. The camps we’ll be highlighting are Club Vet, Prehistoric Planet, Creepy Crawlies and Pirates Cove. Session 8: Planet Earth From the rain forest to the desert, the bottom of the ocean to your own back yard, explore the amazing diversity of life on our planet. We will look at plants and animals of the world's biomes, learn about how humans interact with these environments, and even take field trips to discover West Michigan's freshwater and forest ecosystems. Session 9: Lego I RCX (FULL/CLOSED) Welcome to the exciting world of Lego Robotics. Get an introduction to machines, robot construction, programming and teamwork as your group challenges an all-new robotics obstacle course. Session 35: Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels Further develop your cartooning skills with more realistic figures and action! All the tricks of graphic story-telling and illustration. Students will complete a collective graphic work they can take home. Session 36: Learning Foreign Languages The world seems to be getting smaller and smaller, and communication skills are more important. This class will prime and equip students for language learning and comprehension. Spanish and French are highlighted with many other multi-lingual exercises. Session 10: Club Vet Tykes Explore the exciting world of animal science and care through Hope’s own Van Kley animal Museum. If you want to be a Vet or start your own pet business, come learn animal habitats, nutrition and health care from Anoles to Turtles. Session 11: Spy Club Get ready to explore what it takes to be a Secret Agent and learn the science of Espionage. Basic training covers the theory and practice of surveillance, night-vision, stealth, perception/awareness, coding, self-defense, teamwork and critical thinking. Week 3 Session 13: Pre-Historic Planet Discover the fascinating prehistoric world of dinosaurs, rocks and plants. Learn about types of dinosaurs, where they lived and what they ate. You’ll also explore rock formations, meteors, volcanoes, asteroids, real dinosaur bones and fossils as we dig up the past. Session 14: Shipwreck Detective Set sail as we cover the globe and explore eleven shipwrecks from 70 B.C. to WWII in search of treasure. You’ll learn about diving and marine life, ship building, maps, navigation, history, archaeology and much more. Session 15: Club Vet: Animal Science Explore the exciting world of animal science and care through Hope’s own Van Kley animal Museum. If you want to be a Vet or start your own pet business, come learn animal habitats, nutrition and health care from Anoles to Turtles. Session 16: Science of Art Get ready to explore the awesome world of art as you create your own masterpieces and learn the science of painting, ceramics, printing, photography and sculpture. Your favorite artists never had fun like this. Session 17: VideoGame Electronics Got Game? This camp goes way beyond playing to explore how computers work, how controllers work and how to create your own arcade style game. Campers must bring a 512K (or larger) flash drive or purchase one from the camps. Week 4 Session 18: Super Science Sampler Looking for a mix? Session 19: Lego II NXT Get a continuation of machine mechanics, robot construction and programming with our all new NXT robots. If you thought the RCX system was cool, wait ’til you experience the NXT. Session 20: Space and Rocketry To infinity and then some. Blast off across the universe as we explore space and travel from Comets to Constellations, stars to Mars and galaxies beyond. You’ll also build and launch your own solid fuel rocket. The countdown has begun: 10, 9, 8… Session 21: Club Vet: Animal Science Explore the exciting world of animal science and care through Hope’s own Van Kley animal Museum. Session 22: VideoGame Making (FULL/CLOSED) Week 5 Session 23: Creepy Crawlies Hakuna Matata is the theme for this camp as we explore the awesome world of bugs. From butterflies to beetles, spiders to wasps and everything in between. Learning to identify bugs and creating your own collection will be just the beginning in this slimy yet satisfying camp. Session 24: Mathsters Sports Sports themes will be used throughout this week of math enrichment activities. We’ll explore math topics at a deeper level using hands-on activities and challenging games. If you loved math before, this camp will exponentially expand your problem solving and critical thinking skills. Session 25: Spy Club Get ready to explore what it takes to be a Secret Agent and learn the science of Espionage. Session 37: Building Virtual Worlds (FULL/CLOSED) This camp will introduce students to computer programming techniques through the use of Alice, an interactive programming environment. Students will create stories that take place in 3D "worlds" using a large gallery of characters while adding their own imagination and creativity to the mix. Session 26: Election ‘08 The Science of Politics This camp will introduce students to the exciting world of politics. Explore the race to the White House through polling methods, statistics, the electoral college and the popular vote. Students will also be introduced to campaign issues, run a mock election and much more. There is no better time to investigate politics through the complex election system and become informed citizens. Session 27: Extreme Science CSI If you watch CSI and wondered how those machines do what they do, this is the camp for you! Learn forensics hands-on as we gather evidence, analyze it and solve the crime. Session 39: How Thing Work Get ready to explore the awesome world of science and technology as you learn about and build your own radio and an electric motor. You'll also learn how computer components work as you take apart and then reassemble a working computer. Session 40: VideoGame Making Learn how to design and modify your own exciting arcade style video games...control characters, objects and outcomes as you increase the difficulty level and add features. Leave with your own game to play at home. Campers must bring a 512K (or larger) flash drive or purchase one from the camps. Week 6 Session 28: Pirates Cove Ahoy Maties! Explore the awesome world of underwater life. Learn all about the marine creatures that make their homes beneath the surface. See how they live, “breathe”, eat and survive. We might even find some treasure along the way. Session 29: Building Virtual Worlds (FULL/CLOSED) This camp will introduce students to computer programming techniques through the use of Alice, an interactive programming environment. Students will create stories that take place in 3D "worlds" using a large gallery of characters while adding their own imagination and creativity to the mix.
