Even as he approaches his second year of collegiate golf competition, Hope's Eric Wohlfield continues to receive recognition for his freshman season.
Wohlfield has been named the winner of the eighth annual Softspikes Freshman of the Year award as the outstanding freshman among all NCAA Division III freshman golfers. The award is presented by the College Golf Coaches Association.
A graduate of Brighton (Mich.) High School, Wohlfield was medalist of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and finished 19th at the NCAA Division III championships.
He is the first Hope and MIAA golfer to receive the national freshman of the year award.
In 1998-99 Wohlfield established an MIAA record by averaging 72.4 strokes over eight conference tournaments. Over 13 tournaments during the fall and spring seasons Wohlfield averaged 75.1 strokes per 18-hole round.
The picture of consistency, he was the league tournament medalist only twice, but never shot over 76 and three times had rounds of 70. During the spring he was the medalist in two tournaments. He was named to the District 4 All-District team and was named a pre- tournament All-America prior to the national championships. Wohlfield had the best score among the five individual qualifiers to the NCAA championships and the second best score among all freshman golfers.
