Cyprus-born classical guitarist Paul Vondiziano will perform at Hope College's Knickerbocker Theatre on Friday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for the public, and will be available at the door.
Vondiziano began studying the guitar in his hometown of Larnaca, Cyprus, at age eight, and continued his studies in the United States. He completed degrees in music and philosophy, and received a master of music degree from Duquesne University in Pennsylvania.
After completing his degree, Vondiziano returned to Cyprus, where his performances led to several European tours. He has since returned to the United States, and continues to perform both here and internationally.
He has premiered works for guitar such as Will Bottje's "Lighter Strings" for guitar and harpsichord and "Greetings," as well as his own "Memories of Inner Time" for solo guitar. His recordings include "Two Rooms..." with baroque and South American music, "J.S. Bach: The Four Lute Suites," and "The Mediterranean Guitar," with works by Gaspar Sanz, Mikis Theodorakis, and Carlo Domeniconi.
"Grand Rapids Press" music critic Gerald Elliot has said that Vondiziano is a "superb guitarist...a sensitive musician in full command of his instrument." Dutch music critic Evert Lutz echoed those comments in a concert review, noting "Vondiziano proved himself a soloist of distinction...an aristocrat among guitarists."
Vondiziano's appearance at Hope College will include pieces ranging from the Mediterranean composers to pieces by Bach.
