The forthcoming appearance at Hope College by classical guitarist Paul Vondiziano is highlighted on the calendar of events released by the Michigan Humanities Council in conjunction with Governor John Engler's declaration of October as "Arts & Humanities Month" in Michigan.

The declaration celebrates the arts, culture, heritage and history of Michigan, and recognizes how they enrich and enhance the lives of all Michigan citizens. Also stated in the declaration: "Arts and Humanities Month also provides a special opportunity to honor the many individuals and organizations whose contributions to the visual and performing arts, and to the study of history, literature, philosophy and other humanities disciplines have improved the quality of life for our citizens."

Vondiziano will perform on Friday, Oct. 11, at 8 p.m. at the Knickerbocker Theatre, located at 86 E. 8th St. Tickets are $5 for the public, and will be available at the door.

Also on the Michigan Arts & Humanities Month calendar, for Wednesday, Oct. 9, is a presentation that he will be making to a music class on campus in the afternoon.

Michigan Humanities Council and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs are working with state and federal leaders to encourage the celebration of culture in the state during Arts & Humanities Month, and to increase public awareness of and participation in the humanities and arts. On Tuesday, Sept. 10, President George W. Bush formally recognized October as National Arts and Humanities Month.

Michigan Humanities Council, founded in 1974, is the state's private, non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs is a state agency and is part of the Department of History, Arts and Libraries.
