Dr. Daniel C. Maguire of Marquette University will present the address "Christianity Versus the Lies of War: The Role of Christians in the American Empire" on Tuesday, March 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the Maas Center Auditorium.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

Maguire is a professor of ethics at Marquette University. He specializes in religious ethics focusing on issues of social justice and medical and ecological ethics.

He is the author of 11 books and the editor of three anthologies, and his recent books include "Sacred Rights: The Case for Contraception and Abortion in World Religions" (Oxford University Press, 2003), and "Sacred Energies: When the World's Religions Sit Down to Talk about the Future of Human Life and the Plight of this Planet" (Fortress Press, 2000). He is also the author of some 200 articles published in professional journals and magazines, including "Theological Studies," "Cross Currents," "Atlantic," "The New York Times," "Crisis: Journal of the NAACP" and "Ms. Magazine."

The Danforth Lecture is sponsored by the Hope College department of religion with support from an endowment established by the Danforth Foundation of St. Louis, Mo. The program was established by the foundation "to deepen and enlarge the religious dimension of the campus family through speakers who can reflect on the broad, interdenominational and yet positive sense of the Judaeo-Christian perspectives of life and existence."

Some of the many distinguished scholars who have visited the campus through the program in the past include Dr. Diana L. Eck, a faculty member and director of the Pluralism Project at Harvard University; Dr. Stanley M. Hauerwas of the Divinity School at Duke University; Dr. Martin E. Marty of the University of Chicago Divinity School; Dr. Phyllis Trible of Union Theological Seminary; and Dr. Jon D. Levenson of Harvard University.

The Maas Center is located on Columbia Avenue at 11th Street.
