The campus community is invited to a free screening of the film "Food Inc." on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in Winants Auditorium of Graves Hall.
"Food Inc." examines the nation's food industry. The film's official website notes, "Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser ('Fast Food Nation'), Michael Pollan ('The Omnivore's Dilemma,' 'In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto') along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, 'Food, Inc.' reveals surprising - and often shocking truths - about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here."
The presentation of the film is scheduled in conjunction with a three-day conference organized by Journey, Center for the Church's Learning, a program of Western Theological Seminary. The conference, "The Earth Is the Lord's," is running Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 23-25, and seeks to increase awareness of why Christians ought to care for creation and provide biblical and theological resources for Christians and churches to become better earth-keepers. The conference's planning team includes Dr. Steven Bouma-Prediger, who is professor of religion and chairperson of the department at Hope. The film topic also relates to the theme of this year's Critical Issues Symposium at Hope, "Good Food for the Common Good," which will open with an evening keynote presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and continue with multiple addresses on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
