Multiple student-designed drinks have earned spots on the Lemonjello's menu in the second annual concept contest featured in the college's "Design I" art class.

The students in the semester's three sections of the course were challenged to develop a new drink and accompanying concept and promotional materials for the downtown shop, located at 63 E. Ninth St., with the winner becoming a part of the menu for the remainder of this month and continuing through May.  However, when Lemonjello's owner Matt Scott made his selection from among more than three dozen entries on Friday, Dec. 10, he opted to highlight not only the winner through the end of the school year but the three top runners-up as "beverages of the week" in the coming months.

° First place went to "INK'd," by freshman Samantha Grindl of Crown Point, Ind.  The beverage itself features cinnamon vanilla hot chocolate topped by whipped cream.  The accompanying concept design invites customers to pen reflections on their cup and leave it to be displayed for others to read, noting that, "All of us have been inked by life.  We all have experiences that define us.  We all have stories to tell."

° The second-place finisher was "Allnighter," a 16-ounce energy drink featuring lemonblast, lemonade and blackberry, by freshman Joey Carty of Dearborn.

° The third-place finisher was "Dynamic," a "Mood Latte" with chocolate, caramel and a dash of sea salt, by freshman Susan Haigh of Carmel, Ind.

° The fourth-place finisher was "Hug," a honey almond chai latte, by senior Betsy Melchers of Algonquin, Ill.

The course's instructor, Stephanie Milanowski, who holds the college's Howard R. and Margaret E. Sluyter Endowed Professorship, initiated the contest last year as a way of adding a concrete application to the start-to-finish design assignment.  The students' steps along the way start with visiting the shop and continue with developing not only a beverage but also a logo, promotional poster, recipe card and other support materials.

Last year's winner was "Fingerprint," designed by 2010 Hope graduate Sarah Carr of Novi.
