Two Hope College senior athletes have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District teams in baseball and softball.

Cory Schmidt of Milan, Ohio  (Edison HS)  is being honored in baseball while Laura Tjepkema of Dorr (South Christian HS) is a softball honoree for the second consecutive year.

The program is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Hope athletes are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration

Tjepkema was a special education major who maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American as a junior. An outfielder, she was an All-MIAA first team honoree in both 2012 and 2013. This season she led the team in batting with a .380 batting average. She did not commit a fielding error.

Schmidt was a psychology major who maintained a 3.95 grade point average. He received Phi Beta Kappa academic honors. A pitcher, he posted a 5-2 record this season for the MIAA co-champion Flying Dutchmen. He was named to the All-MIAA second team. His career record is 14-5 heading into the conference tournament this week.
