Hope College’s Kenedy Schoonveld and Olivia Voskuil have been selected as two of the top women’s basketball players in the Great Lakes Region by D3hoops.com.
Both are among five first-team, all-Great Lakes Region selections. Schoonveld also was chosen as co-Great Lakes Regional Player of the Year.
Head coach Brian Morehouse, who directed the Flying Dutch to a 29-0 record this season, is the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.
Players were nominated for D3hoops awards by the sports information directors at the various schools, who were contacted multiple times as the season wound down to remind them to make their players eligible.
There were 769 players nominated nationwide. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region.
It's the 19th season D3hoops.com has named All-Region teams.
Schoonveld, a guard, shared her top Great Lakes Regional honor with DePauw University (Indiana) guard Sydney Kopp.
She joins Carrie Snikkers (2009-11) as Hope’s Great Lakes Regional Players of the Year.
The 5-10 junior from Zeeland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS) averaged 10.3 points per game this season while shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from 3-point range. MIAA coaches selected Schoonveld as the league’s Most Valuable Player and gave her All-MIAA recognition for the third time.
This is Schoonveld’s second D3hoops honor. She was named co-Great Lakes Regional Rookie of the year as a freshman.
Voskuil, a forward, earned her first D3hoops award. The 6-3 junior from Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian) averaged 9.4 points and a team-high 4.4 rebounds this season. She also topped the Flying Dutch at 2.0 blocks and 1.9 steals per game.
Voskuil was chosen as the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in 2020. She claimed All-MIAA First Team honors for the first time.
Morehouse previously was named Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year in 2006 when the Flying Dutch captured their second national title in team history.
This season, Morehouse guided Hope to its first unbeaten campaign and a No. 1 ranking in the final D3hoops.com poll. The Flying Dutch won their 18th MIAA regular-season title and 15th MIAA Tournament title this season. Hope finished league play undefeated for the seventh time in team history and the fifth time at 16-0.
In January, Morehouse became the fastest NCAA basketball coach, women’s or men’s, to reach 600 career wins at 690 games.
