Virtue Lab
Being virtuous equips people for democratic deliberation and civic engagement.
Since 2002, Hope College has committed itself to the Virtues of Public Discourse. These five virtues — humility, hospitality, patience, courage, and honesty — were developed by a committee led by the late Dr. James Herrick, who served as the Guy Vander Jagt ’53 Professor of Communication at Hope College. By cultivating the Virtues of Public Discourse, we ensure that we argue well, and by arguing well, we cultivate these virtues. The quality of our arguments and the virtue of our character are directly related.
