Encounter the beauty of discovery and the power of mathematics and statistics to describe the world.
In the mathematics and statistics department, you will be nurtured within a supportive community of scholars as you develop:
- Critical thinking skills
- Problem solving ability
- Quantitative and logical reasoning ability
- Technical writing proficiency
Our diverse student population includes mathematics majors, future educators and majors from other disciplines, and our program of study is relevant, challenging and experiential.
Degree Programs
Our majors learn mathematics and statistics both in breadth and in depth, and are well-prepared for graduate school, teaching or the workplace. Students pursuing a major in mathematics can choose from one of the following major programs:
- Bachelor of arts in mathematics
- Bachelor of science in mathematics
- Mathematics secondary education
Students may elect to complete a concentration in statistics as a part of their Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. We also provide mathematics and statistics minor programs, as well as minors relating to K-12 mathematics teaching. Jointly with the Department of Computer Science, we offer an interdisciplinary minor program in data science. We maintain a list of courses in mathematics, statistics, economics and management that are recommended for students planning to pursue a career in actuarial science.

Research and Special Opportunities
You'll have the opportunity to join collaborative research groups studying pure mathematics, statistics or the wide applicability of mathematics and statistics to problems in other disciplines. This research advances the fields of mathematics and statistics and complements our teaching mission, both in the continued development of faculty as teachers, scholars and active contributors to our discipline and as a means to develop students as scholars through undergraduate research opportunities.
Students can also engage in mathematics and statistics outside of the classroom through student-faculty social events, Math Club, speaker series, and statewide and national competitions.
