Hope College sophomore Ellen Colenbrander of
Holland (Holland HS) has been voted a collegiate golf All-
American by the National Golf Coaches Association.
Colenbrander is a second team honoree among NCAA Division II
and III players. The first and second teams include six players
from each NCAA division.
Colenbrander is playing in the NCAA Division II and III
national championship tournament this week. She is a two-time
Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) all-
conference player.
She is Hope's second women's golf All-American. The first
honoree was Lisa Stover in 1994.
Other NCAA Division III All-Americans are Tracy Gage and
Stacey Smith of Methodist, N.C., Meredith Hare of Hardin-Simmons,
Tex., Hannah Willenborg of Simpson, Iowa and Christie Strecker of
Concordia, Minn.

  2. Hope Athletes Receive All-MIAA Honors in Spring Sports

    Hope College athletes who compete in springsports have been presented honors by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Hope teams captured conference championships this spring inbaseball and women's tennis while tying for second place in men'stennis and women's track and ending third in softball and tyingfor third in men's track. Senior Mike Meeuwsen of Rockford was voted the most valuableMIAA player in baseball while sophomore Lindsay Etheridge ofGrand Rapids received the honor in women's tennis. Both aregraduates of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Six members of the championship baseball team received firstteam All-MIAA recognition. Honored for the second year werejunior shortstop Dean Esteves of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS),senior third baseman Chad Ruby of Humboldt, Iowa (Humboldt HS)and junior pitcher Adam Labbe of Cadillac (Cadillac HS). Alsohonored were Mike Meeuwsen, junior second baseman Matt Klein ofDeWitt (DeWitt HS) and sophomore outfielder Ben Fellows of DeWitt(Lansing Eastern HS). Achieving All-MIAA first team honors in tennis were LindsayEtheridge, sophomore Paul Lillie of Roseville, Minn. (RosevilleHS), senior Jeff MacDoniels of Holland (Holland HS) and sophomoreJennifer Smith of Holland (Holland HS). Second team honoreeswere senior Steve DeVrieze of Midland (Midland HS), freshmanKristin Kooyer of Holland (Holland Christian HS), and freshmanJulie Murray of Spring Lake (Spring Lake HS). DeVrieze was presented the Lawrence Green Scholarship by theMIAA men's tennis coaches. The award is based on academicperformance in memory of the late Lawrence "Doc" Green, physicaleducator, athletic trainer and coach at Hope. Hope placed five players on the All-MIAA softball teams. Junior pitcher Lisa Larzelere of Omaha, Neb. (Westside HS) is afirst team honoree for the third consecutive year. She is joinedon the first team by junior first baseman Gina Zanin of Lemont,Ill. (Brookfield HS). Second team softball honorees are junioroutfielder Christa Murphy of Midland (Midland HS), sophomorethird baseman Sarah Paccione of Kalamazoo (Portage Central HS),and sophomore second baseman Heather Roy of Alpena (Alpena HS). Five Hope athletes were voted to the All-MIAA track teams. Honored in women's track were sophomore Jennifer Ernst ofWesterville, Ohio (South HS), senior Ellen Schultz of Maple City(Glen Lake HS) and freshman Emily Sowers of Grand Rapids (GRChristian HS) while men's track all-leaguers are senior JeremyBogard of Kalamazoo (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and junior MarkYoungs of Hastings (Hastings HS). Schultz and Bogard have thedistinction of being All-MIAA in both cross country and track.

  3. Hope College Wins MIAA All-Sports Championship

    Hope College has captured the 1997-98 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) All-Sportschampionship for a record 21st time. The MIAA All-Sports award is presented to the MIAA membercollege with the best cumulative performance in the league's 18sports for men and women. Member schools of the MIAA include Adrian, Albion, Alma,Calvin, Defiance, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary's. Newmembers Defiance and Saint Mary's did not calculate into the All-Sports standings because the college did not compete in everyleague sport. The All-Sports award has been presented by America's oldestcollegiate conference since the 1934-35 academic year. It is the second year in-a-row that Hope has won the All-Sports award andthe 14th time in 19 years. Hope showed a balance in its men's and women's athleticprograms. The women's program contributed 83 All-Sports pointsto the total while the men's program added 82 points. Hope ended with 165 All-Sports points followed by Calvinwith 138, Alma 109, Albion 103, Kalamazoo 102, Adrian 62 andOlivet 48. Hope crowned six MIAA champions during the 1997-98 schoolyear and no team finished below third place. League championswere crowned in baseball, men's basketball, football (co-champions with Adrian), volleyball, women's swimming and women'stennis. Second place finishes came in women's basketball, women'scross country, men's and women's golf, men's soccer, men'sswimming, men's tennis (tied with Calvin), and women's track(tied with Alma). Finishing in third were men's cross country,women's soccer, softball, and men's track (tied with Adrian).
