The 1998 Hope College softball team has been honored for academic performance by the
National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
The Flying Dutch had the second best cumulative grade point average among all NCAA
Division III colleges for the 1997-98 academic year. The nation's leader was Hamline,
Minn. with a cumulative 3.441. The Flying Dutch ended at 3.420.
No other college from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) were
among the 10 Division III team to be honored nationally.
The Flying Dutch, coached by Karla Wolters, posted a 21-13 record and finished third
in the MIAA standings.
The 1997-98 school year was a banner year for Hope student-athletes on both the field
of competition and in the classroom. Hope won the MIAA All-Sports award a league record
21st time. Teams and individual athletes competed in a record 11 NCAA championship
events. Eight teams (men's and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming,
softball, men's tennis and men's and women's track) were honored nationally for academic
performance
