Dr. Scott VanderStoep has been named director of the college's Carl Frost Center for Social Science Research.
VanderStoep is also joining the Hope faculty as an
associate professor of psychology. He began his work at the
college earlier this month.
The appointments mark a return to familiar
territory for VanderStoep, who in addition to being a 1987
Hope graduate was also a visiting member of the psychology
faculty from 1992 to 1994. His previous tenure at Hope
included research projects conducted through the center.
"I am very excited about returning to Hope," he
said. "I will miss not doing as much traditional classroom
teaching, but I look forward to the opportunity to serve the
college I love."
He was an assistant professor of psychology at
Calvin College for the past three years, and was a member of
the psychology faculty at Northwestern College from 1994 to
1996. His active research program has led to articles
published in a variety of scholarly journals as well as
numerous presentations at professional conferences.
"He comes with excellent experience in the types
of research essential to the position, particularly survey
research," said Dr. Nancy Miller, who is dean for the social
sciences at Hope. "He has interpersonal skills that we
believe will serve the position well as he relates to the
campus community and the organizations that the Frost Center
serves, and has values that will enhance the Hope
community."
Established in 1990 and located in Van Zoeren
Hall, the center supports student-faculty collaborative
research in all the college's social science departments and
provides opportunities for students to do applied research
with community organizations. The center is named for Carl
Frost, an internationally-known organizational psychologist
and a pioneer in the development and application of
participatory management practices in business.
VanderStoep succeeds Dr. Charles Green, who had
directed the center since 1992. Green, who is also a member
of Hope's psychology faculty, is directing the college's new
Philip Phelps Scholars Program in addition to being on
sabbatical during the coming school year.
VanderStoep majored in psychology at Hope. He
earned a master's degree in social psychology at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1989, and
completed a doctorate in psychology and education at the
University of Michigan in 1992.
