The gallery of the De Pree Art Center at Hope College, in collaboration with the Holland Area Arts Council, opens the 1999-2000 academic year with "Jordi Boldó: abstract painter," an exhibition of recent work by an artist from Querétaro, Holland's sister city in Mexico.

The exhibition will run from Wednesday, Sept. 1, through Friday, Oct. 8. There will be a reception for the artist in the gallery of the De Pree Art Center on Friday, Sept. 10, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m., Boldó will give a lecture in the De Pree Art Center's Cook Auditorium concerning his work. The public is invited to the exhibition, reception and lecture. Admission is free.
The event is the last in a series of exhibitions conceived by the gallery and the Holland Area Arts Council, "Issue Art: Social Views and Sources," funded in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs. During his visit, Boldó will meet with individual students and classes at the college's department of art and the Holland Area Arts Council.
Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1949, Boldó came to Mexico at four months of age and became a naturalized Mexican citizen in 1957. He teaches at the Autonomous University of Querétaro and comes to Hope, which has an on-going exchange relationship with the university, as a visiting artist in the Presidential Lecturer series.
His work is characterized by an intense and highly expressive use of deep and rich color, vibrant texture and an inventive range of materials. He has exhibited in museums and galleries in Mexico, the United States, Canada, South America and Europe.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Office of the Provost at Hope and The Hugh De Pree Fund. The gallery also notes that it also owes special thanks to the Autonomous University of Querétaro.
The De Pree Art Center & Gallery is located at 12th Street and Columbia Avenue. Regular gallery hours following Labor Day Weekend are: Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is handicapped accessible.
