Daniel J. Lappenga, a Hope College junior from Holland, has received the 2000 Barbara Lotze Scholarship for Future Teachers" from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT).
The $2,000 scholarship is awarded by the AAPT
Executive Board to either high school students or
undergraduate students who plan to teach physics. Lappenga
is seeking certification in physics, mathematics and Latin,
and plans to begin his teaching career in 2001.
Lappenga's activities at Hope have included the
orchestra, the Sigma Pi Sigma physics honorary society and
serving as a tutor for the college's Academic Support
Center. He has consistently been named to the Hope Dean's
List.
He is the son of John and Joan Lappenga of
Holland. He is a 1997 graduate of Holland Christian High
School.
Initially founded more than 60 years ago, the AAPT
supports "the advancement of the physics education
profession and the quality and effectiveness of physics
education in the U.S. and throughout the World." The
scholarship is supported by an endowment funded by Barbara
Lotze, and is normally awarded to one recipient per year.
