Hope College junior Josh Boss of Jenison, Mich. joined the ranks of the nation's top breaststroke swimmers as he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. from August 7-12.
Hope College junior Josh Boss of Jenison, Mich. joined the ranks of the nation's top breaststroke swimmers as he competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis, Ind. from August 7-12.
He finished 27th in the 200-meter breaststroke after finishing 48th in the 100-meter breaststroke.
He had an outstanding effort in the 200-meter breaststroke winning his heat and finishing 27th overall among 86 competitors. Swimming in the first heat, Boss was record in 2:21.46. The top 16 swimmers advanced to the semi-finals. Boss remained in contention up until the eighth of ten heats.
He earlier finished in the middle of the pack among competitors in the 100-meter breaststroke. Among 85 qualifiers, he finished 48th with a time of 1:05.40. The top 16 performers advanced to the semi-finals.
Boss was swimming under the auspices of the West michigan Swim Club. He gained the opportunity to compete through his performances on the Hope College swimming team under coach John Patnott.
He is the two-time (1999 and 2000) NCAA Division III national champion in the 200-yard breaststroke. He also won the NCAA championship in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1999. He holds the Division III national record in both events.
He was the second Hope swimmer to qualify for the Olympic Trials. Rob Peel, a 1987 Hope graduate, qualified in 1988, 1992 and 1996 in the freestyle sprints.
