Hope College will host mathematicians
from around the state during a conference running on Friday
and Saturday, April 27-28.

Approximately 100 mathematicians, primarily
college educators, will be attending the 2001 Joint Annual
Meeting of the Michigan Section of the Mathematical
Association of America (MAA) and the Michigan Mathematical
Association of Two Year Colleges (MichMATYC).

The conference will feature presentations on a
variety of topics related to the discipline of mathematics.
The event will include talks on pure and applied
mathematics, and mathematics education.

The presenters come from colleges and universities
around Michigan, as well as from the United Kingdom. Area
schools with faculty or undergraduate students making
presentations include Aquinas College; Calvin College; Grand
Valley State University; Hope; and Western Michigan
University.

The keynote speakers include Elliot Tanis,
professor emeritus of mathematics at Hope; Christopher
Skinner of the University of Michigan; Joan Ferrini-Mundy of
Michigan State University; Edward B. Burger of Williams
College; and John Berry of the University of Plymouth in the
United Kingdom.

Tanis will present "Using Maple for Visualization,
Manipulation, and Simulation." The other Hope faculty
speaking during the conference are: Timothy Pennings,
associate professor of mathematics, who will present "Does
Devaney's Definition of SDIC Imply a Positive Lyapunov
Constant?"; John R. Stoughton, associate professor of
mathematics, who will present "The Incredible Mr. Euler";
and John Van Iwaarden, professor of mathematics, who will
present "Proofs Without Words."

Van Iwaarden and Janet Andersen, who is an
associate professor of mathematics and chair of the
department, are the conference's local organizers.
Stoughton is on the event's program committee.

Interested members of the community are invited to
attend the conference. Additional information may be
obtained by contacting the college's department of
mathematics at (616) 395-7530.
