The Hope College chapter of the Mortar Board national collegiate honor society will be collecting books for elementary-age children during the college's Homecoming game at Holland Municipal Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The Hope College chapter of the Mortar Board national collegiate honor society will be collecting books for elementary-age children during the college's Homecoming game at Holland Municipal Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The chapter is seeking new books or used books that are in good condition. The books will be donated to the Children's After School Achievement (CASA) Program.
The student-staffed collection will take place from 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. on the lawn near the main entrance. The college's game with Kalamazoo College starts at 2 p.m.
CASA runs year-round, providing substance abuse prevention, cultural awareness, academic and career experiences to at-risk kindergarten through fifth grade students. CASA is intended to improve the students' academic performance and help them develop healthy, productive lifestyles. The program is housed at Hope, and CASA's students meet after school twice per week for two hours per session throughout the school year and in the mornings during a six-week summer session.
Mortar Board recognizes college seniors for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service; provides opportunities for continued leadership development; promotes service to colleges and universities; and encourages life-long contributions to the global community. The national organization was founded in 1918.
The 40-member Alcor Chapter has existed at Hope since the 1936-37 academic year, and became a part of the national Mortar Board organization in 1961.
