Flying Dutchmen Second At MIAA Championships

The Flying Dutchmen finished second behind defending champion Calvin at the men's MIAA cross country championships on Saturday (Oct. 27) in Grand Rapids.

The host Knights won the 8K race with 19 points followed by Hope at 68, Albion 78, Kalamazoo 109, Alma 116, Adrian 176 and Olivet 183. It marks the second consecutive year that Hope has been league runner-up.

The meet winner was Calvin senior Justin Pfruender in 25:42. Hope's first finisher was senior Dylan Wade of Beulah, Mich. in fifth place (26:18). Other Hope finishers were senior Keith Cravotta of Sussex, N.J. (Vernon Township HS), 11th (27:03), senior Dane Splinter of Libertyville, Ill. (Libertyville HS), 15th (27:16), junior Lee Kiessel of Suttons Bay (Suttons Bay HS), 25th (27:39), sophomore Mike Douma of Grandville (Grandville HS), 29th (27:48), sophomore Peter Derby of Cadillac (Cadillac HS), 46th (28:37) and sophomore Donavon Hornbeck of Ovid (Ovid Elsie HS), 47th (28:48).

Wade achieved All-MIAA first team honors for the fourth consecutive year. He becomes the sixth Hope male runner in history to earn All-MIAA honors every year, the first since 1987.

Hope runners gaining All-MIAA second team recognition were Keith Cravotta of Sussex, N.J. Dane Splinter of Libertyville, Ill.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Flying Dutch Third At MIAA Championships

The Flying Dutch finished third at the MIAA championship held Saturday (Oct. 27) in Grand Rapids.

Defending champion Calvin repeated by posting a near-perfect score of 19 points followed by Kalamazoo 54, Hope 70, Alma 123, Albion 158, Adrian 160 and Saint Mary's 189.

The winner of the 5K race was Erinn Boot of Calvin (18:38). Hope's first finisher was freshman Tina Pike of Rochester, Minn. (Century HS) in 11th place (19:40). Hope's top seven runners finished within one minute of each other.

Sophomore Martha Graham of Midland (Midland HS) was 12th (19:46), junior Kristen Post of Holland (West Ottawa HS), 16th (19:54), freshman Martha Bouwens of Zeeland (Zeeland HS) 21st (20;13), senior Sarah Golden of Traverse City (Valparaiso, Ind. HS), 27th (20:23), freshman Anna King of Jenison (Jenison HS), 31st (20:30) and senior Jenna Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio (Anderson HS), 33rd (20:33).

Hope had five runners achieve All-MIAA second team status -- Martha Bouwens, Sarah Golden, Martha Graham, Tina Pike, and Kristen Post.
