Nearly 100 men's voices will fill Dimnent Memorial Chapel at Hope College when the Michigan State University Men's Glee Club performs on Saturday, April 6, at 8 p.m.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Although the form of music was once popular, the chance to hear an all-male choral group has become less common in recent years. However, MSU's glee club has been keeping the tradition alive for over 100 years, and has toured all over United States and the world to share its talent.
The current Glee Club is under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Reed, associate director of choral activities. Under Reed, the club has toured Europe three times, and has been invited to perform at several prestigious music conferences. The Associated Students of Michigan State University named Reed "Outstanding Faculty Member" in 1999.
The Men's Glee Club, once called the Singing Statesman, is one of the oldest organizations on the campus of Michigan State University. Originally established around 1800, the chorus functioned primarily as a social club. It became part of the School of Music in the early 1900s.
The group is made up of undergraduate and graduate students, most of whom are majoring in fields outside of music. Students are attracted to the group by the chance to sing in the now-unique ensemble.
The performance is part of Michigan State University's sesquicentennial celebration. There will be a reception following the performance.
