Becky Wieferich, a Hope College junior from Ithaca, has received one of two "Living Memorial Scholarships" for 2002 from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association (GLATA).
Becky Wieferich, a Hope College junior from Ithaca, has received one of two "Living Memorial Scholarships" for 2002 from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association (GLATA).
The scholarship was awarded during the association's annual winter meeting, held in Columbus, Ohio, in March. The association awards only four scholarships to undergraduates or graduate students in the region.
"This is a great honor for Becky and is reflective of her excellent achievement here at Hope College," said Dr. R. Richard Ray Jr., who is a professor of kinesiology and athletic trainer at Hope.
It is the second consecutive year that a Hope student has received one of the $1,000 awards. Current senior Anne M. Bradley of Shaker Heights, Ohio, was honored in 2001.
Wieferich was also selected for an internship with the Detroit Shock of the WNBA this summer. In addition to her active involvement in the athletic training program at Hope, she has participated in intramurals, the international relations club and the Alpha Gamma Phi sorority.
She is a 1999 graduate of Ithaca High School. She is the daughter of Charles and Martha Wieferich of Ithaca.
The Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. The association represents approximately 22 percent of the total membership of the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Members serve in settings including high schools, colleges and universities, professional sports organizations, physician offices, rehabilitation clinics and industrial work sites.
