The Flying Dutchmen will be seeking their first victory of the football season Saturday (Sept. 14) traveling to DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Kickoff will be 1:30 p.m. CDT (2:30 Michigan time).
The Flying Dutchmen and Tigers will be renewing a rivalry that started in 1951. Hope holds a 17-15 advantage in the series, including a 41-21 victory in 2001.
Last Saturday Hope opened at home before a Community Day crowd of nearly 4,000 fans. It will be Community Day at DePauw on Saturday with all fans receiving free admission.
Both teams mixed their offensive plays last Saturday. Against Wooster, the Flying Dutchmen had 33 rushes and 29 pass attempts while DePauw against Rhodes rushed 42 times and attempted 39 passes.
Hope senior punter Vince Scheffler of Chelsea, Mich. has been chosen the Division III national special teams player of the week by the publication Don Hansen's Football Gazette. He is also the MIAA special teams player of the week for the fourth time in his career. He has unique accomplishment of being honored as a freshman, a sophomore, a junior and now as a senior. Vince averaged 45.4 yards on five punts against Wooster. He has a career average of 38.1 yards per punt. Punting could be a difference in this game. DePauw averaged just 16.7 yards a punt in their opener.
Turnovers were a problem for both teams last Saturday. The Flying Dutchmen lost two fumbles and had one pass intercepted by Wooster while DePauw gave up the football four times to Rhodes, three on fumbles and one interception.
