The Hope College Great Performance Series will present the vocal ensemble Cantus on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. at Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
Although only formed a few years ago, the male chamber ensemble is already established as one of top vocal groups performing today.
The group has just released its sixth recording, "Deep River," focusing on the African-American spiritual tradition. A review of the recording by Lindsay Koob in "International Record Review" says what many reviewers have been noting: "Watch for this unique and charismatic group - it is just the sort of un-stuffy and engaging ensemble this nation needs more of... We are likely to be hearing much more from them."
While the ensemble's recordings have received exceptional reviews, it is through concerts that Cantus has gained the greatest fans. "We weren't merely impressed: we were converted," raved "Stereophile Magazine." "We'd shared a profound musical experience with the rest of the audience."
The group's Hope College show features three themes: "Sinners and Saints," "Love," and highlights from "Deep River." The ensemble's repertoire spans periods and genres, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance motets, contemporary sacred works, and even Smokey Robinson.
The "Washington Post" described Cantus's singing as "spontaneous grace," and the "Los Angeles Times" simply says "wonderful."
While in Holland the group will meet with students in Hope College's Encounter with the Arts Class, conduct a masterclass with a Hope College male vocal ensemble, and travel to Jenison High School for a workshop.

Tickets for the performance are $14 for regular admission, $12 for senior citizens, and $5 for children 18 and under.
