Dr. Jean Bethke Elshtain of the University of Chicago will present "Faith's Relevance to Scholarship" as the annual Pew Faith and Learning Lecture at Hope College on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.

The public is invited. Admission is free.
Elshtain is the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago, a position she has held since 1995. A native of Colorado, she previously taught at the University of Massachusetts, and Vanderbilt, Harvard and Yale Universities.
A prolific scholar, Elshtain is the author, editor or co-editor of 20 books as well as hundreds of articles and essays. Her award-winning books include, "Women and War," "Democracy on Trial," "Augustine and the Limits of Politics," "Just War Against Terror," "Jane Addams and the Dream of American Democracy," and "Promises to Keep: Decline and Renewal of Marriage in America."
She holds nine honorary degrees and numerous academic awards and fellowships from, among others, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Guggenhein Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Political Science Association. She is a contributing editor for "The New Republic" and co-chair of the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, and serves on the board of the National Endowment for Democracy.
Elshtain received her undergraduate degree from Colorado State University, and has master of arts degrees from both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Colorado. She holds her doctorate from Brandeis University.
She was a keynote speaker during the college's fall, 2003, Critical Issues Symposium, titled "Putting Science in Its Place" and held on Tuesday-Wednesday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. She presented the address "Contemporary Moral Challenges in Science," and participated in the concluding panel discussion, "Putting Science in Its Place: Discovery and Responsibility - What Does the Future Need from Us? What Do We Need from It?"
The Pew Faith and Learning Lecture is being sponsored by Hope's Pew College Society. The Pew College Society at Hope exists to encourage Hope students to pursue careers in college and university teaching as Christian service. The society was established in 1997, and has 50 junior and senior members.
Nykerk Hall of Music is located in the middle of the Hope campus, along the former 12th Street between College and Columbia avenues.
