Several Hope College students will celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 250th birthday in their opera workshop on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
Several Hope College students will celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 250th birthday in their opera workshop on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium of Nykerk Hall of Music.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
In honor of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, scenes from "The Magic Flute" will be performed. A total of 24 students are involved, and Sean Dooley, who is a visiting assistant professor of theatre, is the assistant director for the production. Accompanists are Linda Strouf, who is an adjunct assistant professor of music, and sophomore Christopher Turbessi of Nunica. Sets were created by junior Michael Braaksma of Cambria, Wis., and costumes by sophomore Amanda Spaanstra of Eau Claire, Wis., and Michael Braaksma. Kendra Stock, a senior from St. Charles, Ill., provided choreography, and make-up is by sophomore Jocelyn Vammer of Midland.
The opera workshop is directed by Linda Dykstra, associate professor of music.
The workshop format allows for selections from longer operas to be performed with minimal staging.
Nykerk Hall of Music is located on the former 12th Street between College and Columbia avenues.
