The Hope College Wind Symphony will perform on Friday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The band will perform a wide variety of pieces under the direction of Jimmy Leach, visiting assistant professor of music.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dimitri Shostakovich, the band will perform "Fortinbras March" and "Galop." "Grand Russian Fantasy," by virtuoso British cornetist Jules Levy, will feature trumpeter Jim Bekkering, who is vice president for admissions at Hope. "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise," by Broadway composers Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II, will feature the flute section.
"They Are There" reflects American composer Charles Ives's concern for politics and war. The original march, written during World War I, supported the doughboys and was titled "He Is There." Ives revised the vocal text during World War II and changed the title. The piece quotes many songs including "Columbia, the Gem," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Dixie," "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp," "Yankee Doodle," "La Marseillaise," "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Taps."
A musical hoax, "Toccata," was supposedly a work by the Italian composer Giralomo Frescobaldi. However, the actual composer was Gaspar Cassad, a Spanish cellist who wanted to promote his work by attaching a famous name to it.
A contemporary work for band by John Paulson, "Epinicion," is an aleatoric piece that takes its inspiration from an epinicion, which is a victory song in the Greek games or in war. "Symphonic Dance #3" is an original work for band by American composer Clifton Williams.
The legendary jazz tune, "Caravan," from the Duke Ellington songbook, is an arrangement by Mark Harvey that features improvised solos. Mechanical sounds appear in "Michigan Motors," by Yale band director Thomas Duffy. The piece's mechanical sound takes its cue from Detroit's early motor works.
The evening will close with "Rhosymedre," by Ralph Vaughan Williams, a transcription of a choral prelude on a Welsh hymn tune.
