Garrison Keillor will feature the poem "Hands" from emeritus professor Jack Ridl's collection "Broken Symmetry" during "The Writer's Almanac" on Tuesday, April 6.
"The Writer's Almanac" is carried in the Grand Rapids area by WBLU-FM, 88.9 FM, which features the program at 9:55 a.m. The program audio is also streamed and podcast from and archived on the APM Web site at http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org.
"Broken Symmetry" was named one of the two best volumes of poetry published in 2006 by the Society of Midland Authors. Keillor had previously read another work from the collection, "The Gardeners," on "The Writer's Almanac" on Monday, April 30, 2007.
In November and December of 2009, Keillor featured two poems from Ridl's latest collection, "Losing Season," which follows a fictional, small-town high school team in an experience lived out annually for decades across the country. Keillor read "Head Cheerleader" on Sunday, Nov. 22, and "Scrub Dreams of Taking the Last Shot" on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
In addition, the Academy of American Poets has selected the poem "Coach Losing His Daughter" from "Losing Season" to be e-mailed throughout the country on Saturday, April 24, as part of the academy's Poem-a-Day celebration for National Poetry Month.
