The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine at Hope College will focus on ankle injuries in its opening address for the 2011-12 season on Monday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in Graves Hall.
Dr. Phillip Gribble of the University of Toledo will present "New Approaches to Understanding Ankle Instability: Distal to Proximal Neuromuscular Control Alterations."
The public is invited. Admission is free.
Gribble is an associate professor at the University of Toledo. He serves as the director of the Graduate Athletic Training Education Program, and the Athletic Training Research Laboratory, and also teaches courses in the accredited undergraduate athletic training program.
His research interests involve the mechanisms by which disruptions in neuromuscular control impair lower extremity function. More specifically, he is interested in functional testing and postural control measures related to chronic ankle instability. He has published more than 40 scientific papers and given more than 100 national and international presentations from his work on impairments in lower extremity neuromuscular control.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in athletic training from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and his Ph.D. in kinesiology from Pennsylvania State University.
The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Shoreline Orthopaedics, Holland Hospital Rehabilitation Services, The Bone and JointCenter, and the college.
Additional lectures in the series this year will be "Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for the Extremities," presented as a lecture/lab on Monday, Nov. 14, by Dr. Brooke Lemmen, a doctor of osteopathic medicine on the faculty of Michigan State University; and "Barefoot and Minimalistic Running: Is Less Really More?" on Monday, March 12, by Dr. Paul Langer, a doctor of podiatric medicine with Twin City Orthopedics of Minnesota.
