Multiple Hope College singers and area high school students who study voice at Hope earned honors during the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Great Lakes Regional Competition, held at Grand Valley State University on Saturday, March 3.

The event featured more than 100 singers from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Ontario, Canada.

Senior Brent Smith of Owosso won first place in the Fourth-Year College Men category.

Freshman Sam Horsch of Gibson City, Ill., won second place in the First-Year College Men category.

Senior Jenna Buck of Elburn, Ill., won third place in the Fourth-Year College Women category.

Senior Christoff Visscher of Silver Spring, Md., won third place in the Third/Fourth-Year Musical Theatre category.

Sarah Ashcroft, who graduated from Hope in 2011, won third place in the Graduate-Level category.

Jamie Colburn, a freshman at Holland High School, won first place in the High School Men category.

Three students won honors in the category for High School Women 16 and Under:  Logan Jones, a junior at West Ottawa High School, won first place; Delaney Piggins, a sophomore at Holland High School, won second place; and Kelly Monahan, a junior at West Ottawa High School, won third place.

All of the competing singers training at Hope study with Linda LeFever Dykstra, who is an associate professor of music and chair of the voice division at Hope.  Their piano accompanists during the event were Jim Colburn and Emily Chapman Steiger.
