Bands

Concert Band

Hope College Concert Band standing on stageThe woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians of the Hope Concert Band comprise a diverse array of majors, life stages and professional trajectories. Majors represented encompass music, engineering, biology and neuroscience. Our complement of community members includes an elementary music educator and a retired family physician.

The diversity of the group makes it an excellent model of lifespan engagement with music. It allows us to understand the intersecting meanings that music making can have, be it an academic pursuit, a foundation for professional performance, a channel for serious recreation or a space for forging community.

Membership is open to students from any major as well as adult community members. Music education majors who aspire to become middle/high school band directors are expected to participate every semester.

Orchestra

Hope College Orchestra

Hope College OrchestraThe Hope College Orchestra anchors itself in J.S. Bach’s beliefs concerning the purpose of musical arts in the created order: “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” Hence, the commitment to artistic excellence as an act of worship is central to the Orchestra courses’ musicianship training.

The Orchestra performs nationally and internationally as Hope’s premier audition-based instrumental ensemble. The ensemble also celebrates its members’ diverse talents by fostering interdisciplinary conversations in its course structure and concert programming. Orchestra students elect nine representatives to form the orchestra board, and together with the orchestra director, they become the curriculum planning committee responsible for shaping an orchestra course that benefits students not only in their artistic growth but also in their various degree programs and vocations.

The audition registration is open to all students on campus, regardless of major.
