The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine of Hope College will continue at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids on Wednesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. with a look at hip pain.

Dr. Steve Andriese, who is a physician in private practice in Grand Rapids, will present "Evaluation and Treatment of Hip Pain in Athletes" at the hospital, located at 235 Wealthy S.E. in Grand Rapids.

The public is invited. Admission is free.

According to Andriese, there is a fair amount of overlap between hip pain in athletes and that of the general population, particularly with more people engaging in activities such as running, cycling, basketball or soccer into their later years. Such pain, he noted, can be a result of repetitive movement in fitness activities and athletics, and can also result from problems originating in areas other than the hip itself, such as the spine or leg. For health care practitioners involved in treating hip pain, he said, the primary goals should be optimizing biomechanics, rehabilitation and conditioning.

The Distinguished Lecture Series in Sports Medicine, which features a variety of topics, is designed for health care professionals with an interest in physically active patients, and is intended for students, educators and clinicians alike. It is co-sponsored by Shoreline Orthopaedics, Orthopaedic Associates of Grand Rapids, GRSportsCenter and the college.

All lectures in the series begin at 7 p.m., and will be presented either at the college or at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids.
