- Session 1AOne Body… Many Parts: Working Together to Move Hope Forward
-
Chaired by: Dr. Kirk Brumels, Faculty Moderator/Professor of Kinesiology; Sara Dorer, Director of Human Resources
Location: Jack H. Miller Concert Hall
In life and work, coordinated activities of multiple systems are often required for an organism/organization to thrive. Quality performance within individual roles is crucial, but a greater purpose is realized when these activities coalesce around common goals. While division of labor is necessary for the team's success, divides among and within teammates are destructive. This session will explore the various areas of responsibility required of Hope College employees as outlined in our mission/vision. Through understanding, acknowledging and respecting each member and every role of our team, we can continue moving forward and deliver on our promises to our students.
- Session 1BHow Do We Utilize Transparency Frameworks to Increase Learning, Formation and Belonging?
-
Chaired by: Kasey Stevens, Associate Dean of Integrative Learning/Director of Phelps Scholars
Location: John & Dede Howard Recital Hall 120, Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts
What can we do when students aren’t engaging, don’t seem to be getting it and struggle to find their place at Hope College? Problem-centered learning and transparency in teaching and learning are two proactive methods with evidence for increasing students’ learning outcomes, confidence in learning, engagement and sense of belonging. This session will provide an overview of findings associated with these methods, a framework for their implementation and suggestions for their potential broader impact on student belonging.
Joining the session chair will be a panel of experts to share iterative, incremental and practical examples of these methods from their work: Dr. Rekha Varghese (Director of CAPS), Dr. Stephen Maiullo (Interim Dean of Arts and Humanities) and Zachary Adams (Assistant Professor of Digital Instruction). Attendees are encouraged to bring digital or print copies of materials (e.g., syllabus, Moodle, co-curricular program plan, etc.) to work-shop during the session.
- Session 1CDesigning a Campus Project for the Hope Community
-
Chaired by: Office of Possibilities
Location: Ritsema Instrumental Rehearsal Room 130, Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts
Are you interested in imagining possibilities for a project that builds community and creates a campus element for all to appreciate? In conjunction with the Office of the Associate Provost, the Office of Possibilities will lead a design thinking session to create some options for consideration.
3–4:30 P.M.
(choose one)
- Session 2AA Global Campus: Hallmarks of Belonging and Inclusion
-
Chaired by: Amy Quincey, Senior Director of Fried Center for Global Engagement
Location: Cavanaugh Choral Rehearsal Room 140, Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts
Have you ever considered what a global campus looks like and how we best prepare our students to be engaged in service and leadership in a global society? How do we connect our efforts to internationalize the campus and curriculum to our firm commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion? What role do international students, staff and faculty play in providing a diverse perspective and rich opportunity for us to think critically about our global neighbor? How do our international colleagues and students experience Hope as a community? How can off-campus study contribute to students’ understanding of their place in the world as they grow in Hope’s articulated global learning outcomes of curiosity, empathy, knowledge, self-awareness and responsibility? And what are the visible and invisible hallmarks that Hope is a global campus, welcoming and offering all a place of belonging and inclusion? Join us for a panel presentation and roundtable discussion.
- Session 2BClear is Kind: Supporting Students with Empathy and Policy
-
Chaired by: Student Support and Retention Office
Location: Ritsema Instrumental Rehearsal Room 130, Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Art
Have you noticed patterns in students requesting exceptions from your course expectations? Do you feel challenged in how to respond to those requests? In this session, participants will learn more about the student experience outside the classroom to provide added context and understanding of student behavior. We will discuss policies, resources, and best practices that can empower you to enforce boundaries to reduce behaviors that negatively impact your course. There will be time for discussion, Q&A and brainstorming around these topics.
- Session 2CStep-By-Step Together: Co-Creation and the Future of Learning
-
Chaired by: Dr. Gerald Griffin, Provost/Associate Professor of Biology & Psychology; Dr. Heidi Kraus, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs/Associate Professor of Art History
Location: Jack H. Miller Concert Hall
Co-creation changes the future of learning by synergizing students’ and instructors’ curiosity, experience and expertise to collaborate in curriculum design. In many ways, Hope has been engaged with co-creation via our world-class academic programs and faculty-student research. This session will focus on making co-creation more accessible to all disciplines by 1) defining what co-creation is, 2) examining its promises for the future of learning, and 3) embracing its transformative potential.
