Degree Programs

Our major and two minors include a separate track for students pursuing a teaching certification in political science or social studies.

Program Outcomes

Hope College students completing a political science degree will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the core concepts and theories that inform the study of politics and political science across the sub-fields of the discipline  
  • Demonstrate proficiency in knowing and utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods of research and analysis in political science
  • Think critically, research effectively and communicate clearly about politics, political ideas and public policy
  • Articulate the meaning of citizenship across local, state, national and global contexts, and model a commitment to engaged, responsible and informed citizenship and civic participation
  • Discern a mature understanding of politics and government from a Christian perspective, including how Christian faith and practice might inform one’s political thought and public behavior
  • Attain knowledge of professional and career opportunities related to the study of politics and intentionally explore vocational paths in politics, government, civil society and elsewhere
  • Provide culturally competent care for individuals, families, groups, communities or populations. 
  • Engage in continuous professional development through advanced education and/or activities of lifelong learning.
